The Monday Morning Madness

Just a short note this morning to see how your morning has gone? As planned or a bit chaotic?

If you were really well organised, you would have wrote yourself a list of things to do on Monday morning – on Friday evening last – but in the real world for most, that doesn’t happen. If you were fairly well organised – you might have done this yesterday afternoon (Sunday) – but maybe that too is a little too much – after all, Sunday is for relaxing…

When you work for your self, it’s easy to take the path of least resistance and just “wing it” come Monday. But how often does Just winging it pay off? Very often, without knowing it, you become a victim of your business and end up chasing your tail for the morning, wasting time, energy and money….

The moral of the story, please?
There’s one small change you can make in your business today, than can have a tremendous impact on your finances – and it will not cost you a penny to implement…. One security company that I worked with were on the verge of collapse when I met them. They were very busy but not making any profit. Their prices were not too low – in fact they were a little higher than many of their competitors. the owner and his wife worked long hours every day and at the weekends. They had four installers on the road and regularly subcontracted work out, but the owner and his wife were taking a lower salary than they paid their employees – just to try to keep the business going.
With one small change (not increasing their prices) – they were able to turn a turn a loss making business to a €5500 profit in the first three months.

Find a builder in Ireland

It’s a popular search term on Google. Find a Builder in Ireland or How to Find a good builder in Ireland.

How do you measure up on this? How would your customers find your business? Do you know exactly how your current customers found you?
Its important to know where your customers are coming from – then you will know that this form of marketing actually works. and if it works and the income from those customers justifies the expense of the effort – then do more of it…

I have spoken to many of our members who used websites like find a tradesman, online tradesmen and similar. These sites generally charge you a fee for being listed on the site – and then force you to compete on price for the job. If you really think about it – you are paying them to cut your prices. This is a ridiculous situation for any business – never mind tradesmen – who’s earnings have been whittled away by the effects of an 8 year long recession.

I know that many tradesmen join these “competition sites” to try to get more work. Maybe they have received text messages from these sites telling them that they have loads of work and nee tradesmen and builders to sign up quickly. maybe they just need more work quickly… This is the path of least resistance for many tradesmen looking for more work – its easy and quick – or at least that’s the premise that they join up to… And that’s generally where the good story ends. For many tradesmen and builders in Ireland it’s then a case of competing on price to get the work. These sites are a reverse auction – plain and simple – a race to the bottom…

The end customers enter the details of their job onto the website. Then the builders and tradesmen offer their best price for the work – and as the customer has no other way of distinguishing between the bidders – so the lowest price will win the day. There are three parties involved – the tradesman, the customer and the website operator (reverse auctioneer). The tradesman is the looser in this relationship every time – unless of course they are happy to work for the lowest price they can get…

So why am I telling you this? Two reasons. 1. To make you, the builder and tradesman aware of what will happen to your pricing when you participate in these find a builder type sites. Your profit will be eaten away by faceless competitors. And 2. to tell you that there is an alternative – well there are actually loads of alternatives – and we do our best to teach you what they are and how to use them. We teach our members how to distinguish themselves from their competition and to make themselves the tradesman of choice to their idea customers.

Unlike other national associations, we want you to succeed and will give you all the tools and help you need to get there. And unlike the competition websites we don’t want any of our members to be competing on price. Here’s to your success. If you are lucky enough to be off tomorrow, have a great weekend.

Getting stuff done!

Getting ‘Stuff’ Done…
Friday afternoon come and you wonder – “Where did my week go?”
We’ve all been there and looked back and thought that you didn’t achieve much for your past 5 days efforts.
Her’e s a useful tool to help focus your attention on the Important stuff and help cut out the time vampires..
For one day, carry with you a note book and keep a note of what your have done for every 15 minute slot during one full work day. Try and include as much detail as you can – so it will make reviewing your efforts easier later.
Now leave the notes until the following evening – leave them for a full day – or even two.
Looking back over your notes now, take a highlighter pen and highlight the items on your list that were absolutely critical that you had to do them (A) yourself – that no-one else could possible do them, and (B) the items that had to be done that day.
The other items are those that you should be delegating or outsourcing – or shouldn’t be done at all.
Think this is nonsense – then try it for a day. At a guess, there’s maybe 20% of the items on your list – and likely even more – you you should not be wasting your time on.
This ties in with your goals. If they things you are doing in your day are not congruent with your goals – then you have to decide why you are doing them…
Food for thought…

Goals – they’re not just for footballers.

Goals – they’re not just for footballers.
Goals in our personal lives and businesses are more important that we would give them credit for. They are great in helping you focus on what is important, giving you direction, measuring your own performance and helping you manage your time.
Great… that all sound like a load of corporate balls – but it’s not so bear with me for a minute…
Lets say that your goal was to bring the family on holiday to Disney Florida for 3 weeks. Lets put a number on the cost of that – maybe €10k. You now have a goal that says you need to take home an extra €10k from your business next year to pay for your holiday – and immediately you have a new goal for your business – to provide you with that extra income. you now know that you need an extra €200 per week (plus tax) of profit. You know your margins, so you can work out how many extra customers you need to generate this amount of profit. You know your conversion of leads to customers (or at least when you work with us in FMBI – you will) . So You’ll know how many additional leads you will need each week, So now, without any corporate BS, you can see what goals can be a great help – and really a necessity in your life and your business.
Goal setting will also help you manage your time better by helping you focus on what is important to meet those goals.
It’s a pretty big subject but its not rocket science. Most people given the time, can describe their goals clearly. Quite often all you need is a little help or coaching to get started and then maybe a little motivation to keep you going in the right direction.
