I hope you are all good and hopefully Summer is just about to arrive (although a bit late!).
How is business? Hopefully your answer is … very good! Lots of our members are reporting that they are flat out, which is great. Many are telling us that they’ve been able to pick and choose the work that they are doing now. Which is exactly the position that we want them to be in. Please note – to those who have not begun to implement what you’ve learned – you can be a busy fool… Busy doing the work that you should be passing over or subbing out… That’s the low value stuff. At least that’s what we’ve been trying to teach everyone.
Honestly, this can take a complete change of mindset. Many people have been conditioned by the last 7 or 8 years to accept every bit of work that comes their way. Unfortunately, if this is you…. then you are very likely flat out busy doing the €15-20 per hour work, and not having any time to chase the €40-50/hour work. And that’s too true for many small business owners.
Many still feel that they shouldn’t be passing up any work that comes their way – and that the €40+/hour work is a flash in the pan and won’t last.
Let me do a simple calculation for you.
Lets just say for arguments sake that you currently work 40 hours a week (though many of you work much more). And lets say that on average – the work you are doing is bringing in €20/hour. That’s €800 per week or €40k per year…. Some reading this might be happy with that. It’s nothing to be turning up your nose at – but there is always room to improve….
So, you are flat out for your 40 hours and you haven’t time to run around pricing more work. Before you know it, the work has dried up and you’re back at square 1 again – looking for work.
Okay, lets look at that 40 hours again. this time – you are taking on private work on price. With the right marketing (and that’s easy) you can get €40 per hour for your time. That means to get to your €800 – you now only have to work 20 hours. you could work 4 days and have nearly €1300 for your time – and have a day off to price new work, work on your marketing, network with prospective customers – or take a long walk after a wee white ball around a golf course!
The higher priced work is there. You just need to take a little time to stand back and look at how you are marketing yourself and your business. You need to position yourself as the expert and trusted advisor and instead of chasing this higher paying work – it comes to you!
If you think I full of it – well just think about your own business – your own industry – for a minute. Everyone knows someone in their industry that is earning way more then them, working fewer hours, driving a nicer car, living in a nice house. Well???
Well this is how they do it! They work smarter, not harder! It’s about marketing, about positioning themselves and their business.
